The Best Beaches on the Oaxaca Coast, Mexico
Oaxaca’s coastline is a treasure trove of stunning beaches, each offering its own unique charm and experience. We’ve ordered the best beaches Oaxaca has to offer by area, making this list easier to navigate depending on where you plan to visit.
Best Beaches in the Puerto Escondido Area
Punta Pajaros
“As one of my favorite bases along the Oaxacan Coast, Punta Pájaros is one of Oaxaca’s most exclusive and secluded stretches of coastline, offering barefoot, dirt road kind of luxury and untamed natural beauty” – says TME editor-in-chief Alexandra Wieteska.

Located between the bustling town of Puerto Escondido and the raw Lagunas de Chacahua, Punta Pajaros is the best beach in Oaxaca for luxury travelers. This area is home to some of the region’s most refined accommodations, including Grupo Habita’s stunning Hotel Escondido and the sustainable and avant-garde Terrestre Hotel.
Both properties cater to discerning travelers looking for privacy, with their minimalist design blending seamlessly into the rugged landscape. The beach itself is wild and pristine, perfect for long, contemplative walks, especially at sunset when the sky is painted with hues of orange and pink.
However, the strong currents and rough waves mean it’s not ideal for swimming, making the serene, artfully designed hotel pools the best spot for a refreshing dip.
Beyond its natural allure, Punta Pájaros is also a hub for contemporary art and culture. The nearby Meridiano art gallery showcases a curated selection of works from local and international artists, offering a window into the region’s vibrant creative scene.
Casa Wabi, the acclaimed art foundation founded by artist Bosco Sodi, is another highlight. Located just a short drive away, this cultural retreat hosts artist residencies and exhibitions, making it a must-visit for art enthusiasts.
Staying in Punta Pájaros offers a truly immersive experience, where luxurious comfort, art, and nature converge in one of the most spectacular and untouched areas of the Oaxacan coast.
La Punta

La Punta Zicatela is the boho and surf heart of Puerto Escondido, where surf culture meets laid-back sophistication. Located at the southern end of the famous Zicatela Beach, this vibrant neighborhood is a haven for travelers seeking a more relaxed, community-driven experience.
The long stretch of golden sand is renowned for its consistent surf breaks, attracting wave enthusiasts from around the world. If you’re a beginner, there are numerous surf schools offering lessons in the gentler waters, while seasoned surfers can be found riding the more challenging waves further out.
What sets La Punta apart is its eclectic mix of offerings beyond the beach. The area is a buzzing hub of creativity and culinary innovation. Along the main dirt road, you’ll find a colorful array of cafés, organic eateries, boutique shops, and barefoot chic hotels, each with its own unique flair. Whether you’re in the mood for a freshly brewed cup of Oaxacan coffee, a yoga session under the palm trees, or a handcrafted souvenir, La Punta delivers a casual, yet refined, style.
Evenings here are a delight, with a buzzing dining scene and the sounds of live music filling the air. Beachfront bars and restaurants come alive as the sun dips below the horizon, offering a front-row seat to spectacular sunsets. Despite its growing popularity, La Punta Zicatela maintains a sense of authenticity and charm, making it an essential destination for those looking to experience the soul of Puerto Escondido in a setting that feels both vibrant and intimate.
Playa Zicatela

Stretching over three kilometers, Playa Zicatela is the crown jewel of Puerto Escondido’s surf scene, renowned for its powerful waves and vibrant atmosphere. This iconic beach, often called the “Mexican Pipeline,” attracts professional surfers from around the globe who come to conquer its massive swells.
The northern end of Zicatela is less developed than its southern counterpart at La Punta, offering a more expansive, open setting. Here, you can stroll along the wide, sandy shore, watching surfers carve through waves against a backdrop of endless ocean.
Although the beach is not ideal for swimming due to its strong currents and towering waves, it’s a fantastic place for sunbathing, beach volleyball, or simply relaxing at one of the many laid-back beach bars. The strip is lined with rustic palapas and chic beach clubs- they get better the closer to La Punta you get-, serving everything from local seafood to international cuisine.
The area’s nightlife is legendary, with beachfront bars hosting live music and parties that attract a younger crowd and last well into the night. For those looking to experience the raw energy and beauty of Puerto Escondido, Playa Zicatela is a must-visit destination.
Playa Carrizalillo
Playa Carrizalillo is arguably the best beach in Puerto Escondido, with its turquoise blue waters and crescent-shaped bay framed by lush green cliffs.

The beach’s calmer, clear waters make it a better choice for swimming (but you still need to look out for large waves), and beginner surfing, but getting there requires descending a steep set of stairs—over 150 steps in total. This means it’s not the best option for travelers with reduced mobility, but for those who can make the trek, the reward is well worth it.
The beach is lined with a variety of small restaurants and beach clubs, offering everything from fresh seafood to tropical cocktails, making it easy to spend the entire day here. Large waves occasionally roll in, adding to the beach’s dynamic beauty and attracting surfers looking to catch a mellow ride. Whether you’re looking to relax on a sun lounger or take a dip in the inviting water, Playa Carrizalillo is a little gem of the Oaxacan coast.
Playa Manzanillo and Puerto Angelito

For those looking for a very local Mexican beach experience, there are the twin beaches Playa Manzanillo and Puerto Angelito, immediately in Puerto Escondido town.
Playa Manzanillo is a picturesque, crescent-shaped beach with calm waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. It’s a favorite among families and those looking for a relaxed day by the sea. The gentle waves and soft sand make it an ideal spot for kids, while the vibrant marine life just offshore draws snorkelers.
A handful of palapa restaurants offer delicious seafood and cold drinks, making it easy to enjoy a leisurely beach day. Accessible by a short walk from downtown Puerto Escondido, Playa Manzanillo does get busy but it’s a great beach escape nonetheless.
Puerto Angelito, just around the corner from Playa Manzanillo, is a lively, smaller beach with a vibrant local atmosphere. This sheltered cove is perfect for swimming and taking short boat trips to nearby hidden beaches and snorkeling spots. The beach is dotted with bustling eateries serving fresh seafood- look for the oyster vendors at the far end -, tacos, and tropical drinks, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists.
While it’s not our favorite beach in Puerto Escondido, and it can get crowded, especially on weekends, Puerto Angelito’s local charm and accessibility make it a great spot for a quick dip or a taste of authentic Oaxacan coastal life.
Playa Bacocho

Further up the coast from Puerto Escondido’s main beaches, Playa Bacocho offers a tranquil retreat with a focus on conservation. Known for its serene, expansive shoreline, this beach is home to the important sea turtle initiative, Campamento Tortuguero Vive Mar. Every evening around 5 p.m., visitors can participate in the magical experience of releasing baby sea turtles into the ocean, a unique and heartwarming activity that supports local conservation efforts.
Playa Bacocho is less crowded than its neighboring beaches, making it perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape- ideal for an afternoon, turtle release, and sunset stroll. With a few beach bars offering sunbeds and refreshing cocktails, it’s a great place to relax and watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.
Agua Blanca
Agua Blanca is a little hidden gem, a small community and beach located between Puerto Escondido and Mazunte, perfect for those exploring the coast by rental car. This small beachside community offers a tranquil escape with a laid-back vibe, far removed from the busier tourist spots.
The beach features a long stretch of golden sand and natural pools formed by the rock formations here, ideal for a dip or boogie boarding. Lined with rustic palapa restaurants, Agua Blanca is the perfect place to enjoy freshly caught seafood and cold drinks right on the sand. It’s a great pit stop for travelers seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience along the Oaxacan coast.
Best Beaches in the Mazunte/Zipolite/Puerto Angel Area
San Agustinillo

San Agustinillo Beach is a serene, crescent-shaped bay located between the towns of Mazunte and Zipolite. Known for its golden sand, relaxed vibe, and large waves, this beach is perfect for walking, bodysurfing, or simply lounging under the sun.
The charming fishing village atmosphere, combined with a variety of beachfront restaurants and cafés, makes it an idyllic spot to unwind, without the crowds of nearby Mazunte.
For those seeking a unique place to stay in San Agustinillo, Monte Uzulu offers eco-chic accommodations with ocean views surrounded by lush vegetation, mixing both barefoot luxury and sustainability. San Agustinillo is one of our favorite spots in Oaxaca for a laid-back, local atmosphere and the ideal base to explore Mazunte and the surrounding area.
Mazunte

One of the most up-and-coming destinations on the Oaxaca coast is the small coastal town of Mazunte. Celebrated for its laid-back beach vibe during the day and decidedly more party-vibe in the evening, Mazunte still boasts stunning natural beauty, and commitment to environmental sustainability.
This small beach town has become a favorite among travelers seeking an escape from Puerto Escondido, thanks to its expansive golden sands, clear blue waters, and breathtaking sunsets. The beach itself is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and moderate surfing, with gentle waves that cater to both beginners and more experienced surfers.
Mazunte is also known for its unique bohemian atmosphere, attracting a diverse crowd of artists, yogis, and eco-conscious travelers. The town is dotted with rustic cabanas, boutique hotels, and wellness retreats, making it a perfect destination for those looking to relax and meet other travelers.
A highlight of Mazunte is its commitment to conservation and community-driven tourism. The Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga, a national turtle center, is located right in town and is dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of sea turtles. Visitors can learn about the different species and their conservation efforts. Alongside the beach, a range of charming cafés and restaurants serve delicious local cuisine, often featuring fresh seafood and organic ingredients.
Rinconcito

Sitting on the western end of Mazunte Beach is Rinconcito or ‘Little Corner’, a tranquil slice of sand embraced by lush, tropical surroundings. Time seems to slow here, with sun-soaked days spent lounging on the soft, golden sand, and refreshing dips in the gentle surf. The secluded cove is framed by verdant hills, creating a sheltered paradise that feels worlds away from the bustle of everyday life.
Small, rustic cafés and beachside shacks offer simple yet delicious fare, perfect for enjoying under the shade of swaying palm trees. The atmosphere is wonderfully laid-back but the party vibes are felt, with a barefoot vibe and a focus on the natural beauty of the area.
Whether you’re watching pelicans glide over the waves or planning your sunset hike up to Punta Cometa, Rinconcito invites you to slow down and savor the simple pleasures of this idyllic corner of Oaxaca’s coast.
Playa Mermejita
Playa Mermejita is an unspoiled stretch of sand on the western edge of Mazunte, where rugged cliffs meet vast stretches of pristine sand. Known for its wild, untamed beauty, this beach is a favorite among those looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the surrounding nature of the Oaxacan Coast.
The dramatic setting, with its powerful waves and rocky outcrops, creates a striking backdrop for a day of solitude. Despite its remote feel, Playa Mermejita is just a short walk from town, making it easily accessible yet blissfully secluded. Arrive early in the day to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, as you’re likely to have the beach all to yourself.
As the afternoon sun softens, the beach transforms into a magical landscape where long shadows stretch across the sand, and the horizon glows with the promise of another spectacular sunset. Playa Mermejita is ideal for those seeking a more tranquil and contemplative experience, far from the bustling energy of Mazunte’s main beach.
Playa Cometa

Playa Cometa, nestled at the western side of the tip of Punta Cometa, is a secluded treasure offering breathtaking views of the Pacific. Known as the best spot in the region to witness spectacular sunsets, it draws visitors daily who gather on the cliff’s edge to watch the sun dip into the ocean, painting the sky in vivid hues. While sunset is the most popular time to visit, it’s also when the beach becomes crowded with onlookers.
Arriving earlier in the day provides a different experience—tranquil and almost meditative, with the vast stretch of sand and gentle waves all to yourself. The rugged path to Playa Cometa winds through verdant hills and offers glimpses of the dramatic coastline, adding to the sense of adventure and discovery. This hidden gem captures the raw, untouched beauty of Oaxaca’s coast, making it a must-visit for those seeking a top beach in Oaxaca for serenity, privacy, and stunning natural landscapes.
Zipolite
Zipolite Beach Oaxaca is a captivating stretch of golden sand known for its bohemian vibe and laid-back atmosphere. As one of Mexico’s few officially recognized nudist beaches, it attracts free spirits and adventurous travelers from around the world.
The expansive beach, framed by rugged cliffs and dotted with rustic palapas, offers a relaxed and welcoming space for everyone, whether you prefer sunbathing, swimming, or simply enjoying the view. The waves can be strong, making it a popular spot for experienced surfers, while the vibrant main street behind the beach is lined with eclectic cafés, bars, and artisan shops that come alive at night.
Zipolite’s unique mix of natural beauty and open-minded culture creates a truly unforgettable experience and one of the best beaches near Oaxaca.
Playa Estacahuite
Playa Estacahuite is a hidden cove just outside of Puerto Ángel, offering a picture-perfect setting for those craving serenity and crystal-clear waters. Completely worth the extra effort it may take to get here, this small beach feels like s secret oasis far removed from the beaten path.
Its calmer, turquoise waters are perfect for snorkeling, revealing vibrant coral reefs and a kaleidoscope of marine life just beneath the surface.
Accessible via a steep, winding road, Playa Estacahuite is a little slice of paradise for those willing to look outside of the more popular pockets of sand around. Unlike the busier beaches nearby, Estacahuite remains refreshingly uncrowded, making it an ideal spot for those who appreciate solitude and natural beauty. A few rustic palapa restaurants dot the shore, serving up delicious seafood and refreshing drinks, adding to the beach’s off-the-beaten-path charm.
Playa Pantéon

Playa Pantéon, located within the small fishing village of Puerto Ángel, is a sheltered cove known for its tranquil waters and vibrant local atmosphere. This small, crescent-shaped beach offers a spot of relaxation and authentic Oaxacan culture, making it a favorite among both locals and travelers.
The calm, shallow bay is sheltered from Oaxaca’s towering waves and is ideal for swimming and snorkeling, with colorful fish darting around the rocky outcrops just a few meters from shore. Lined with palapa restaurants, Playa Pantéon is a great place to savor freshly caught seafood and enjoy a cold coconut while watching the local fishing boats come and go.
Its proximity to the town center makes it easily accessible, yet it retains a laid-back charm that invites visitors to linger – we arrived at 10 am and didn’t see anyone else for a good few hours.
Best Beaches in the Huatulco Area
Bahia De Cacaluta
Bahía de Cacaluta is a hidden jewel within Huatulco’s nine bays, offering an untouched stretch of coastline framed by dense jungle and dramatic cliffs. Accessible only by boat or a scenic hike through Huatulco National Park, this pristine beach feels wonderfully remote and isolated. The bay’s unique heart-shaped outline and powdery white sand are often seen only by a few intrepid explorers, making it ideal for those seeking solitude, adventure, and unspoiled beauty.
The waters here are a vibrant blue, perfect for snorkeling and exploring the rich marine life just offshore. There are no facilities or restaurants, so visitors should come prepared with water and snacks, and be sure to pack out what they bring in. The bay’s wild, undeveloped landscape offers a sense of tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere, with the sounds of waves and the call of exotic birds as the only interruptions.
Bahía de Cacaluta is a true hidden paradise, for those looking to disconnect and experience the raw beauty of Oaxaca’s coast.
Playa La Entrega
Not far from the center of Huatulco, you’ll find one of the best Oaxaca beaches, Playa La Entrega. Framed by lush green hills and calm, crystal-clear waters, this Blue Flag beach is a favorite for those looking to escape the busy resort town without venturing too far. The tranquil bay is perfect for families, offering safe swimming and excellent snorkeling right from the shore, where vibrant coral reefs teem with marine life.

The beach has a vibrant and very local atmosphere and an abundance of amenities that make it one of the best beaches in Oaxaca State for families and groups looking to enjoy a fun day out.
Despite its popularity, especially with Mexican resort-goers the beach retains a laid-back vibe, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and local flavor. Whether you’re looking to explore underwater treasures or simply lounge under the sun, Playa Maguey is a quintessential Huatulco experience.

Bonus: Laguna de Chacahua/Playa Chacahua
Laguna de Chacahua and in particular Playa Chacahua form a breathtaking duo of natural beauty and cultural richness on Oaxaca’s stunning coastline. Located within the Chacahua Lagoons National Park, this remote paradise is known for its serene lagoon, pristine beaches, and vibrant biodiversity and is easily one of the best beaches in Oaxaca Mexico.
Getting here is part of the adventure: most visitors take a combination of car and boat. From Puerto Escondido, it’s about a two-hour drive to the small town of Zapotalito, where you’ll board a lancha, or small boat, for a scenic ride through the mangroves, past flocks of herons, and into the expansive lagoon that opens up to Playa Chacahua.
The journey is rewarded with an unforgettable landscape—miles of untouched beach, gentle waves, and the tranquility of a place largely untouched by tourism. The beach is perfect for long walks, sunbathing, and catching some waves, as it’s a popular, yet low-key, surf spot- what La Punta used to look like many years ago.
The nearby lagoon, with its calm, warm waters, is ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. At night, bioluminescent plankton often light up the lagoon, creating a magical display as you move through the water.
The village of Chacahua, nestled between the lagoon and the beach, offers a glimpse into the local Afro-Mexican culture. Simple, thatched-roof cabanas and a few small restaurants serving fresh seafood provide all you need for a rustic but comfortable stay. Don’t miss the chance to visit the lighthouse, which offers panoramic views of the Pacific coast and the stunning interplay of lagoon and ocean.
