Best Time to Visit Tamul Waterfall & Huasteca Potosina
The best time to visit Cascadas de Tamul and the Huasteca Potosina region is right at the beginning of the dry season, November-January when the rivers are full, and the waterfall is at its most impressive. During these months, the rivers still preserve the heavy rainfall left after the rainy season and help to enhance the cascade’s powerful flow, transforming it into a breathtaking spectacle of force and beauty.
The surrounding jungle is also at its most vibrant, lush, and alive, offering an immersive experience in the heart of nature.
For those seeking calmer waters for canoeing or swimming, the dry season from December to May provides a gentler, more tranquil environment, although the waterfalls in the area are generally not as dramatic and they might dry up entirely.
In recent years there have been reports of Tamul falls drying up completely around March and April as water is diverted for agricultural irrigation use. This means that visiting during this time, you will be able to access the falls but there may not be any water following from them.
Visiting during the rainy season is certainly an option, though it comes with some added risks. The area is susceptible to flooding from heavy rains, which can sometimes render roads impassable and affect the clarity of the rivers. It’s important to be prepared for these conditions if planning a trip during this period.
During the rainy season, currents on the Tampaón River may be too strong to navigate and the hike to access the Tamul Waterfalls is also impossible after heavy rains.
It’s important to note that Cascada Tamul San Luis Potosi, is among the most popular waterfalls in the region, which can lead to significant crowds, particularly on weekends and during national holidays. Accessing the waterfall by boat can become especially congested during these peak times. For a more serene and relaxed experience, visiting on a weekday is highly recommended.
How to Get to La Huasteca Potosina
Getting to La Huasteca Potosina requires some planning, as the region is fairly remote and large.
The closest major city is San Luis Potosí, which is well-served by flights and buses from other parts of Mexico. From there, you can rent a car and make the 4-5 hour drive to the heart of the region, allowing for the flexibility to explore its numerous natural wonders. Renting a car is the best way to explore La Huasteca Potosina as the region is quite isolated.
Alternatively, you can take a bus from San Luis Potosí to Ciudad Valles, the largest town in Huasteca Potosina, and use it as your base for visiting nearby waterfalls and attractions. While car rentals are available in Ciudad Valles, options can be limited.
Another route is to fly into Querétaro International Airport, which is roughly the same distance as San Luis Potosí, and drive from there, passing through Xilitla.
If traveling from Mexico City, prepare for a scenic 8-10 hour drive to reach this stunning region of San Luis Potosí.
For those not planning on renting a car, the best option would be to take a bus to Cuidad Valles and then book a tour of Cascadas de Tamul and Huasteca Potosina’s other waterfalls and sights from there.

Regardless of your approach, the main attractions here are the stunning falls and the chance to swim in the pristine blue waters. For much more varied services, head back to Cuidad Valles afterward for a meal.

How to Access Cascada de Tamul
To reach Cascada de Tamul, you have two options: paddle a wooden boat down the serene Tampaón River or hike to the base of the falls for a more rugged adventure. Each path has its charm, -the latter being the more rugged and adventurous of the two options- and both have very different vantage points of the falls.
Accessing Cascada de Tamul by Boat
The most popular way to experience Cascada de Tamul is by paddling upstream in a traditional wooden canoe, known locally as a “lancha.”
Departing from the small village of La Morena, this journey offers a tranquil yet invigorating way to approach the waterfall. With motorboats banned to protect the delicate ecosystem, the only way to move forward is by paddling, which adds an authentic, hands-on feel to the adventure.
The trip takes about 45 minutes, depending on how many others are aboard to help with the paddling.
Your canoe will stop at a large rock formation in the river, located a few hundred meters from the base of the falls. While you won’t get up close to the thundering cascade, the vantage point from this spot still provides stunning views. Adventurers are welcome to climb the rock for a photo, capturing the beauty of Tamul from a unique angle.
On the return journey, you’ll have the opportunity to float lazily downstream in your life jacket, soaking in the peaceful surroundings. The boat will also stop at Cueva del Agua, a deep, cenote-like cave with strikingly blue waters—an ideal spot for a refreshing swim and a moment of calm amid the wild landscape.
River tours to access Cascada de Tamul needn’t be booked in advance, just turn up at the river in La Morena and enquire about the next available departure. Most tours are on shared boats but private lanchas are also available to hire.

Accessing Cascada de Tamul by Hiking
For those seeking a more adventurous yet surprisingly accessible option, hiking to Cascada de Tamul offers a unique perspective of this stunning natural wonder. The trek begins at the top of the waterfall, allowing you to witness the dramatic drop from above before winding down to view it from below along the riverbank.
To begin the hike to Cascada de Tamul, you’ll need to drive to the small hamlet of El Naranjito. Along the way to ‘Campamento Tamul’, it’s common to encounter local guides offering their services. Hiring a guide is mandatory for the hike, as they are essential for navigating the trail and ensuring a safe experience.
After arranging for your guide and paying the required entrance fees, you’ll continue along the rugged road that leads to Campamento Tamul, where the adventure truly begins.
After a rugged drive, you’ll arrive at Campamento Tamul, the trailhead for our hike. The path follows the river, taking travelers through lush rainforest scenery for about 20 minutes before reaching a breathtaking lookout. From this vantage point, you can see the falls in all their glory, cascading into the turquoise river below.
The descent to the base of the falls continues down a series of steep metal ladders—more like stairs going down the cliffside. It’s steep but sturdy and safe.
At the base of the trail, a breathtaking view of the waterfall from below unfolds, showcasing the full power and beauty of Cascada de Tamul. From this vantage point, the sheer force of the cascade is truly awe-inspiring. While swimming directly beneath the falls is impossible due to the strong currents, a calm section of the river nearby offers the perfect spot for a refreshing dip, adding an extra layer of relaxation to the scenic hike.

Tamul Waterfall Tour
For those seeking a hassle-free experience, booking a Tamul Waterfall tour from Ciudad Valles is a convenient option. These guided tours typically include everything you need for the day: transportation to and from the waterfall, a local guide, and the choice between a canoe ride along the Tampaón River or a hike to the falls.
Many tours also include a stop at nearby attractions like the Cueva del Agua or other scenic spots in Huasteca Potosina. With everything arranged, these tours allow you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of Tamul without worrying about logistics.
What to Pack to Visit Cascada de Tamul
When visiting Cascada de Tamul, packing smart is essential to fully enjoy the experience. Comfortable hiking sandals or sneakers (hiking boots are generally not needed in the dry season) with good grip are a must, especially if you plan to trek to the falls.
Bring a swimsuit and a quick-drying towel for a refreshing swim in the river, as well as sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the strong sun on the boat trip. It’s generally recommended to avoid wearing sunscreen when swimming in the river, as the chemicals can harm the delicate ecosystem of the water. For protection, opt for an eco-friendly, reef-safe sunscreen that minimizes environmental impact while still offering sun protection.
A reusable water bottle is recommended to stay hydrated during the hike or boat ride, and a waterproof bag will help keep your belongings dry, especially if you have any camera gear. If you’re planning on capturing stunning views, don’t forget your camera or phone, ideally in a waterproof case.
Snacks and light food can be handy, as facilities are limited, especially on the hiking route. Lastly, pack insect repellent for after your swim, as the lush surroundings of Huasteca Potosina can attract mosquitoes, particularly near the water.
Other Attractions Nearby
