One of the best things about Loreto, Mexico’s fishing scene is that it’s a year-round adventure, with the Sea of Cortez offering an ever-changing bounty depending on the season. No matter when you visit, you’ll find something biting, but the catch varies with the temperature of the waters.
In the cooler months, snapper and seabass are some of the most sought-after fish, their light, flaky fillets perfect for cooking up after a rewarding day on the water. These species thrive in the winter, with yellowtail being a particular highlight for sport fishing in Loreto. In March, grouper joins the mix, adding another sought-after catch to the list.

As the weather warms, the same winter species continue to be plentiful, but by May, the first signs of big-game fish appear. Yellowtail, cabrilla, roosterfish, pargo, and grouper remain steady, while marlin and sailfish begin to make their seasonal return.
June
This month marks the transition into peak offshore fishing season. While yellowtail starts to fade, marlin, sailfish, dorado, and tuna become more common. Cabrilla, pargo, and grouper are still abundant, making June one of the most diverse and best fishing months in Loreto, Mexico.

The height of summer is the best time for big-game fishing. Marlin, sailfish, dorado, and tuna dominate the waters, offering thrilling sport fishing action. Cabrilla and pargo continue to be present, particularly in reef areas. With warm waters and clear skies, this is prime fishing season for offshore anglers.

November – December
As the waters cool again, yellowtail returns to the scene, along with cabrilla, roosterfish, pargo, and sierra. These months signal the shift back to winter fishing, where anglers can enjoy steady action close to shore while anticipating another cycle of big-game arrivals in the coming year.

Where to Go Fishing in Loreto, Mexico
Loreto’s prime fishing spots are scattered across the shimmering waters of the Sea of Cortez, offering a mix of inshore and offshore experiences.
One of the most popular destinations is Danzante Island, a fishing haven known for its rocky reefs, where cabrilla, snapper, and grouper thrive. The island’s deep waters also attract yellowtail and, in the right season, marlin and sailfish.
Coronado Island, just a short boat ride from Loreto, is another top spot, where I was lucky enough to reel in roosterfish, sierra, and dorado in the surrounding waters while enjoying spectacular views of the island’s volcanic formations.
For those looking to venture further, Del Carmen Island is a must-visit, with deep waters teeming with yellowtail, pargo, and even the occasional tuna. Its remote location makes it ideal for those chasing larger catches away from the crowds.
Beyond the islands, the open seas surrounding the Baja coastline offer prime opportunities for sportfishing, especially during the summer months when marlin, sailfish, and dorado dominate.
