What to Buy in Oaxaca City
When shopping in Oaxaca City, the sheer variety of handcrafted treasures is astounding. Among the most iconic are the vibrant textiles and handwoven rugs from Teotitlán del Valle, known for their intricate designs and use of natural dyes made from plants and insects like cochineal. If you’re not heading out to the town, make sure to hunt them down in Oaxaca City.
Another standout is the striking black clay Oaxaca pottery from San Bartolo Coyotepec, famous for its rich, dark sheen and smooth, burnished finish. You’ll also want to look out for the earthy, green-glazed pottery from Santa María Atzompa, prized for its rustic elegance.
Oaxaca is also the birthplace of alebrijes—brightly colored, fantastical wood carvings of animals and mythical creatures, crafted by artisans in villages like San Martín Tilcajete and Arrazola. Other must-buys include intricate silver jewelry, hand-embroidered blouses and dresses from up-and-coming Mexican designers, and mezcal, Oaxaca’s signature spirit, often sold in beautiful, artisanal bottles.
No matter what you’re looking for, Oaxaca’s rich tradition of craftsmanship ensures that you’ll find something truly special to bring home.
