Known as the ‘Lagoon of Seven Colors,’ its centerpiece is a breathtaking stretch of water that shimmers in hues of turquoise and sapphire, making it one of the most picturesque destinations in the country.
But Bacalar is more than just a visual feast—it’s a place where ancient Mayan history meets modern sustainability, offering a mix of cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, and serene wellness escapes.
Whether you’re seeking to kayak through crystalline waters, explore ancient ruins, or simply relax at a luxurious lagoonside retreat, Bacalar is a destination that invites you to slow down and savor the natural beauty of this part of Mexico.
This guide will take you through the best things to do in Bacalar Mexico, ensuring your visit is as unforgettable as its vivid lagoon.

A Little History on Bacalar
Bacalar is one of Mexico’s oldest continually inhabited towns, with roots tracing back to the Maya civilization. The town’s name originates from the Mayan word B’ak Halal, meaning “surrounded by reeds.”
As a vital hub for trade and agriculture, Bacalar was an important center in the pre-Hispanic era, with the lagoon serving as a key route for transporting goods like honey, cacao, and textiles. During the colonial period, Bacalar became a target for pirates drawn to its strategic location and wealth, leading to the construction of the formidable Fort of San Felipe in 1729, which still stands today as a reminder of its turbulent past.
Now one of the designated pueblo mágicos of Quintana Roo, Bacalar continues to honor its rich heritage while captivating modern travelers with its natural beauty and cultural charm.
Best Time to Visit Bacalar
The best time to visit Bacalar is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. This period offers sunny skies, warm temperatures, and ideal conditions for enjoying the town’s stunning lagoon and outdoor adventures.
December through February, in particular, brings slightly cooler evenings and a festive atmosphere as travelers flock to this pueblo mágico for a winter escape. If you prefer a quieter, more exclusive experience, consider visiting in early November or late April, just before and after peak season.
It’s important to note that Bacalar is located in a region that can be affected by hurricane season, which runs from June to November. While hurricanes rarely pass directly through Bacalar, nearby storms can disrupt water clarity and the tranquil ambiance of the lagoon, even if the area itself remains safe. Travelers planning to visit during this time should monitor weather updates and be flexible.
Additionally, plan your itinerary to avoid Wednesdays, when, by local law, all boat trips are paused to allow the lagoon a day to rest and rejuvenate—a sustainable initiative to protect its delicate ecosystem.

How to Get to Bacalar
The best way to get to Bacalar is by renting a car, as it provides the flexibility to explore the surrounding area and is especially convenient if you’re staying in one of the lagoonside hotels located outside the town center.
The drive from popular spots like Tulum or Playa del Carmen is straightforward and takes about three to four hours, offering scenic views along the way. For those who prefer not to drive, private transfers are readily available from Playa del Carmen and Tulum, providing a hassle-free and comfortable option.
Another reliable choice is the ADO bus, which connects Bacalar to major destinations, including Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Mérida, Cancún, and Chetumal. These buses are affordable, air-conditioned, and a popular option for more budget-conscious travelers or those without access to a car.
Best Things to Do in Bacalar, Mexico
Take a Boat Trip on the Lagoon

A private catamaran trip is the ultimate way to explore Bacalar’s iconic Lagoon of Seven Colors, offering a luxurious and intimate experience as you glide across its shimmering turquoise waters. These tailored excursions allow you to soak in the lagoon’s natural beauty at your own pace while visiting its most celebrated landmarks.
We sailed through the Canal de los Piratas (Pirates’ Canal), a historic waterway once used by buccaneers, and stopped for a refreshing swim in its mineral-rich shallows. Along the way, we also explored the lagoon’s striking cenotes, such as Cenote Esmeralda and Cenote Negro, known for their mesmerizing depths and vibrant ecosystems.
Many private tours also include a visit to the magical Isla de los Pájaros (Bird Island), a sanctuary for local birdlife. With the guidance of knowledgeable captains, you can relax on deck with gourmet refreshments while soaking up panoramic views of Bacalar’s enchanting lagoon.
For those after something different, pontoon boat tours are a classic sight in Bacalar, offering a relaxed and scenic way to explore the lagoon, with many private tours available for those who prefer a more leisurely journey on the water.
Watch a Sunrise Over the Lagoon

There’s nothing quite like watching the sun rise over Bacalar’s Lagoon of Seven Colors, as the early morning light paints the water in a spectrum of soft pastels before transforming into its signature turquoise hues. For those staying in town, head to the pier by Muelle Público 36, a charming public dock that offers unobstructed views and a serene atmosphere for this magical moment.
If you’re lucky enough to be staying at a lagoonside hotel, simply step outside to your private terrace or dock and let the tranquility of the lagoon envelop you as the day begins. Bring a warm drink, a cozy wrap, and your camera to capture the quiet beauty of Bacalar’s most peaceful time of day.
Relax at a Beach Club

Bacalar’s beach clubs, known locally as balnearios, offer the perfect places to unwind by the lagoon, even though you won’t find traditional sandy beaches here. Instead, expect wooden decking or grassy areas that lead right up to the water’s edge.
For a laid-back, eco-conscious vibe, head to Balneario Ecológico, a tranquil spot ideal for soaking up the lagoon’s beauty right in town. If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere, La Playita combines a beach club and bar with great food and drinks in a lush setting.
Balneario Cenote Cocalitos is a must-visit, not only for its relaxing vibe but also for its proximity to the mesmerizing cenotes nearby and a chance to see stromatolites up close.
For an authentic Mexican experience, Balneario Ejidal Mágico is a popular spot with locals and Mexican travelers.
Other great options include the chic Blu Beach Club and Balneario Lol-Ha, both offering a mix of relaxation and fun. These balnearios are perfect for spending a day by Bacalar’s shimmering lagoon, with plenty of options to suit every style.
While Los Rápidos is often touted as a must-visit spot in Bacalar, and can be counted as a beach club of sorts, we found it to be more of an overcrowded, theme park-like attraction than a serene lagoon escape. The natural beauty of the area is undeniable—its slow-moving waters and picturesque views make it undeniably photogenic—but the experience leaves much to be desired.
What’s most concerning is the lack of regard for the fragile environment, particularly the billion-year-old stromatolites that line the water’s edge. Visitors wading and stepping on these ancient formations have caused significant damage, and the bustling, chaotic atmosphere undermines any sense of tranquility.
While it may pop up on many travel lists, Los Rápidos falls short of what makes Bacalar special, and we can’t, in good conscience, recommend it as one of the best things to do in Bacalar. Bacalar has so many other experiences that honor its natural beauty and heritage without compromising it.
Visit Fuerte San Felipe

A visit to Fuerte San Felipe is a journey through Bacalar’s tumultuous history, offering a fascinating glimpse into its colonial and maritime past. Built in 1729 under the orders of Don Antonio de Figueroa y Silva, the fort was a critical defense against the relentless pirate raids that plagued Bacalar due to its strategic location along trade routes.
Constructed with sturdy stone walls and surrounded by a moat, the fort was equipped with cannons and watchtowers to protect the town and its treasures, including goods transported via the lagoon.
Today, the fort houses the Museo de la Piratería (Piracy Museum), where exhibits showcase the region’s rich history, from its pre-Hispanic Maya roots and Spanish conquest to the battles with pirates and buccaneers. Perched above the Lagoon of Seven Colors, Fuerte San Felipe also offers breathtaking views, making it an ideal spot to reflect on Bacalar’s resilience and vibrant heritage.
Explore Downtown Bacalar

Downtown Bacalar, with its charming streets and laid-back atmosphere, is the perfect place to soak up the town’s unique vibe. The main square, Plaza Principal, or Zocalo, is the heart of the community, where locals gather in the evenings, and colorful vendors sell artisanal crafts and snacks.
I loved strolling beneath the shade of the square’s leafy trees, stopping for a refreshing nieve de coco from a local cart. Around the plaza, you’ll find quaint cafes, boutique shops, and vibrant murals that tell the story of Bacalar’s cultural heritage.
Don’t miss the town’s small church, San Joaquín Parish, which is steeped in history and radiates quiet charm. Exploring downtown Bacalar feels like stepping back in time, with every corner offering a glimpse into the soul of this pueblo mágico.
Go Kayaking or Paddleboarding

For an intimate connection with Bacalar’s Lagoon of Seven Colors, kayaking or paddleboarding is an unforgettable experience. Gliding across the calm, crystalline waters allows you to fully immerse yourself in the lagoon’s natural beauty while exploring at your own pace.
Begin your journey in the early morning, when the water is tranquil and the sunlight casts a golden glow over the lagoon. Paddle through lush mangroves, marvel at the vibrant blues of the cenotes, and venture into the Canal de los Piratas, soaking in the history and serenity of this unique spot.
Many lagoonside hotels, beach clubs, and tour operators offer high-quality equipment, making it easy to embark on your adventure. For those seeking a peaceful solo escape or even a fun group outing, kayaking or paddleboarding provides an up-close encounter with Bacalar’s stunning ecosystem.
Visit Cenote Azul

Cenote Azul is one of Bacalar’s most iconic natural wonders, renowned for its deep, sapphire-colored waters and tranquil ambiance. Located just a short drive from the town center, this open cenote is one of the largest in the Yucatan Peninsula, with depths reaching over 90 meters (295 feet).
Surrounded by lush vegetation, it’s a serene spot for swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing by the water’s edge. Unlike Bacalar’s shallow lagoon, Cenote Azul’s waters are dramatically deep, offering a striking contrast and a unique opportunity to explore its underwater beauty.
After a refreshing swim, enjoy an ice-cold beer at the nearby restaurant, which offers stunning views of the cenote. A visit to Cenote Azul is one of the top things to do in Bacalar for those seeking to experience the region’s diverse aquatic landscapes.

The best time to visit is just after sunrise when the boardwalk is blissfully quiet, and the golden morning light bathes the landscape. It’s also the perfect moment for birdwatching, as a variety of species, from herons to vultures, can often be spotted.
The Ecoparque boardwalk is a must-see for its tranquility and connection to Bacalar’s unique environment. It’s also an ideal spot to visit during the day, as you’ll be able to access the lagoon’s waters from the outermost part of the boardwalk.
