Just 20 minutes by ferry from Cancún, Isla Mujeres is a small island that feels like a world apart from the glamour-filled resorts of Cancun’s Hotel Zone. Known for its turquoise waters, powdery white sand beaches, and vibrant local culture, this tropical gem is perfect for a quick day trip or an extended stay.
After wrapping up a few extra days in Cancún following a business trip, I found myself with unexpected free time and decided to take a spontaneous detour to Isla Mujeres. I hopped on a ferry and made my way to the island. What I found was a thriving beach scene, a handful of gorgeous resorts, white sand and water so turquoise it was hard to take my eyes off of it.
While Isla Mujeres is easily doable as a day trip from Cancún, I opted to stay longer to truly immerse myself in its offerings—from the sun-soaked beaches and happening beach clubs to the mouthwatering local cuisine. The island’s bright turquoise waters and friendly atmosphere instantly felt like the perfect antidote to the hustle of daily life, and I couldn’t wait to dive into its unique blend of relaxation and adventure.
Here are some of the best things to do in Isla Mujeres, experiences and spots that are unmissable for a delightful stay.

Getting Around Isla Mujeres
While Isla Mujeres may be a small island, it’s still large enough to warrant having your own set of wheels to truly make the most of your visit. The best way to explore Isla Mujeres is by renting a golf cart, which is hands down the most popular option among visitors. You’ll find plenty of rental shops around the ferry terminal and throughout the island, offering both hourly and daily rates.
I rented from Good Mexican Golf Cart Rental and all went very smoothly. Renting a golf cart gives you the freedom to zip from the northern beaches to the southern tip with ease.
If you’re looking for something a bit more nimble or quick, consider renting a scooter. Scooters are a fantastic choice for solo travelers or couples who don’t need as much space. Be sure to bring your driver’s license, as it’s required for both golf cart and scooter rentals.
Best Things to Do in Isla Mujeres
Relax on Playa Norte

Playa Norte, often hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, is the crown jewel of Isla Mujeres. This stretch of powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water at the northern end of the island is the perfect spot to unwind and soak up the tropical sun.
The calm, shallow waters make it ideal for swimming, even for families with small children, while the vibrant beach bars and restaurants ensure you won’t have to go far for a refreshing cocktail or a delicious meal.
That being said, Playa Norte is the busiest part of the island, so if you’re not partial to crowds, head here early in the morning for a calm beach walk before the day trippers arrive.
Go Diving or Snorkeling

Isla Mujeres is a paradise for divers, offering both incredible diving and snorkeling opportunities. If you’re a diver, make MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) your first and perhaps only stop. This unique underwater museum features hundreds of sculptures that serve as artificial reefs, creating a surreal and unforgettable experience.
For snorkelers, Isla Mujeres boasts several must-visit spots. Head to El Farito, a shallow reef area perfect for beginners for vibrant coral formations and schools of colorful fish. Another fantastic location is the Manchones Reef, which offers stunning underwater views just a short boat ride from the island.

Spend a Day on the Water

One of the most luxurious and relaxing things to do in Isla Mujeres is to spend a day on the water. Private boat or catamaran tours offer an upscale way to explore the island and its surrounding turquoise waters. These tours often include perks like gourmet meals, open bars, and snorkeling equipment, ensuring a seamless and indulgent day trip experience.
For an unforgettable day, consider chartering a private catamaran for your group. Many tours offer customizable itineraries, allowing you to visit secluded beaches, swim in crystal-clear waters, or snorkel at some of the island’s best reefs, like Manchones Reef or El Farito.
Sunset cruises are another fantastic option, perfect for couples looking for a romantic evening.

Visit Punta Sur

Punta Sur, located at the southernmost tip of Isla Mujeres, offers breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and a chance to explore the island’s natural beauty- it was one of my favorite places on the island.
This dramatic cliffside area is perfect for a morning stroll, where you can visit the ancient Mayan temple dedicated to the goddess Ixchel and marvel at the art installations along the Sculpture Garden.

Take a Peak at or Stay in Casa Caracol
Casa Caracol, also known as the Shell House, is one of the most unique architectural gems on Isla Mujeres. Designed by renowned architect Eduardo Ocampo for his brother Octavio, a celebrated artist, Casa Caracol reflects the island’s connection to the sea and its artistic soul.
Shaped like a pair of seashells, the house’s organic curves and intricate details showcase a creative fusion of architecture and nature. The interior features custom furniture and vibrant decor that continue the oceanic theme, making it as stunning inside as it is outside.
While Casa Caracol functions as a vacation rental and can be booked here (do so well in advance), the exterior has become a landmark for visitors seeking to admire its imaginative design. It’s a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of its creators, offering a delightful glimpse into the creativity that defines Isla Mujeres.
If you’re staying at one of the top luxury hotels or resorts on Isla Mujeres, it’s worth stopping by for a photo and to marvel at this extraordinary piece of architecture, at least from the outside.
Relax at a Beach Club

For those seeking a more refined beach experience, Isla Mujeres’ beach clubs offer the perfect combination of luxury and relaxation. These clubs provide a serene escape where you can enjoy private cabanas, comfortable loungers, and attentive service. Many beach clubs, such as Zama Beach Club or Guru Beach Club, boast beautiful oceanfront locations, gourmet food, and handcrafted cocktails.
Zama Beach Club is one of my personal favorites. The tranquil vibe and stylish setup make it ideal for lounging the day away. Their ceviche is a must-try, and sipping on a cold margarita while overlooking the calm waters is pure bliss.
Guru Beach Club at the Lotus Boutique Hotel is another standout, where I go regularly when visiting the island, offering an exclusive, upscale atmosphere. With luxurious loungers and an infinity pool that practically melts into the horizon, this spot feels like a true retreat. Guru has day passes available, making it accessible even if you’re not staying at the property.
Check out Isla Mujeres’ Dining Scene

Isla Mujeres offers a vibrant dining scene. While the island doesn’t offer much in the way of fine dining (for that, you’ll need to head to Cancun), it excels in fresh seafood and authentic island grub. The must-try dishes here include Tikin Xic, a traditional Yucatecan-style fish marinated in achiote and citrus, then grilled to perfection, and Sikil Pak, a unique Mayan dip made with roasted pumpkin seeds and fresh tomatoes.
Both dishes capture the essence of the island’s culinary heritage and are not to be missed.
Some of my standout dining spots are; Limon, a charming restaurant known for its warm ambiance and inventive dishes. Muelle 7 is the perfect spot for fresh seafood, offering a laid-back atmosphere with incredible views of the water.
Mayakita Restaurant combines traditional flavors with modern techniques in a cafe-style spot that’s also great for brunch. For casual beachside dining, La Playita is a top choice, where you can enjoy delicious meals with your toes in the sand.
Swim with Whale Sharks
Swimming with whale sharks is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that Isla Mujeres offers during its annual whale shark season, which runs from mid-May to mid-September. These gentle giants are the largest fish in the ocean, and encountering them up close in their natural habitat is truly unforgettable.
Guided tours take you to their feeding grounds, where you can snorkel alongside these magnificent creatures while learning about their behavior and conservation. Be sure to book with a reputable tour operator to ensure an eco-friendly and safe adventure. Book your whale shark tour.
Top Tip: You may have encountered whale shark tours available from Cozumel or Isla Holbox. All those tours come to Isla Mujeres, as the whale shark feeding grounds are just off the coast of the island. If you’re heading to Isla Mujeres and interested in seeing the whale sharks in their natural habitat, Isla Mujeres is the best place to book from.
Book a Spa Session
Indulging in a luxurious spa session is the perfect way to unwind and rejuvenate during your stay on Isla Mujeres. Many of the island’s top spas are located within its five-star resorts, offering world-class treatments in serene and opulent settings.
The spa at Almare is a standout, featuring an array of treatments inspired by Mayan traditions, such as detoxifying body wraps and soothing massages with natural ingredients.
Another excellent choice is the Secrets Spa by Pevonia at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets, where you can enjoy hydrotherapy circuits, aromatherapy, and couples’ packages designed for ultimate relaxation.
