Our editors share all their tips in this ultimate Tulum packing list.
Embarking on a journey to Tulum is not your average beach vacation preparation. Sure, the basics of sun, sand, and sea require the usual suspects in your suitcase, but packing for Tulum is a whole different ball game.
Renowned for its boho-chic vibes, breathtaking landscapes, and a unique blend of ancient culture mixed with modern luxury, Tulum demands a more thoughtful approach to packing.
This isn’t just about tossing a few swimsuits and sundresses into your bag; it’s about curating a collection, of both capsule and unique pieces, that match the elegance and spirit of one of the most chic beach retreats in the Yucatan Peninsula and the world.
Collectively we’ve been to Tulum over 12 times, so we’ve had ample opportunity to refine our packing lists to perfection. This ultimate Tulum packing list includes everything we’ve ever needed over the years as well as chic outfit choices and accessories that perfectly match Tulum’s boho vibes and beautiful beaches.
This guide is designed to be your compass, steering you through the essentials with a sprinkle of insider tips and recommendations, ensuring you arrive in Tulum not just prepared but also feeling confident and stylish.

What to Wear in Tulum: The Overall Vibe
Tulum’s unique charm lies in its ability to blend the effortless with the exquisite, and its overall vibe can be described as lux-boho-chic.
Attracting travelers that appreciate the finer aesthetics of beachside leisure, the demographic here is diverse yet distinctly sophisticated. It’s not about overt glamour but rather a bohemian luxe appeal, where fashion-forward beach cover-ups and floaty sundresses take center stage.
Daytime attire in Tulum is all about casual elegance; think floaty kaftans, satin sets and open-toed sandals, topped off with a chic bikini.
As the sun sets, the style subtly shifts upwards. Tulum has a laid-back yet upscale nightlife scene when generally you might get a little more dressed up and having a satin dress and some strappy sandals for example might add that elevated touch.
Of course, you don’t need to conform to particular styles when visiting Tulum and if boho-chic is not something you’d be seen dead in then don’t worry about it but it’s worth noting that Tulum is more stylish and elevated than your average beach destination.

Keeping the Warm Weather in Tulum in Mind When Packing
The weather in Tulum is characterized by its tropical warmth, boasting an enviable consistency that sees average temperatures hovering between the 70s and 90s Fahrenheit throughout the year. It’s generally hot and humid.
Tulum’s winter runs from November- April where generally the weather isn’t as humid, it’s bright and sunny most of the time but it can get a little cool in the evenings. A little rain is also possible.
During Tulum’s summer months- May-October, expect very humid conditions and rain (it is the Riviera Maya’s rainy season after all).
Given Tulum’s tropical climate, your luggage should lean towards lightweight and breathable fabrics that promise comfort as well as style under the sun’s rays.
Think linens and cottons that allow your skin to breathe, ensuring that you remain cool and comfortable at the beach clubs as well as when exploring the ancient ruins or cenotes.
Remember to check the weather, just before you pack so you have a better idea of the conditions you might have during your Tulum trip.
What Luggage to Bring to Tulum
When it comes to luggage pretty much anything goes in Tulum and you’ll be able to get away with a vast array of luggage options. There are a few things to consider, however.
Beachfront hotels on the Tulum strip, for instance, don’t have elevators and paved pathways, meaning you might find yourself navigating sandy or uneven grounds to reach your room. In such cases, opting for lightweight luggage helps.
“The last time I was in Tulum”, says TME Founder Alexandra Wieteska, “I stayed at two different properties on the beach road about 500 yards apart. A taxi fare between them would have cost me $30, so I walked, with a 50 lb suitcase in tow. It wasn’t the most ideal situation, navigating traffic, potholes, and flooded streets, but had I been able to pack light, the situation would have been a breeze.”
Also, convertible luggage that combines the practicality of wheels with the flexibility of straps offers an excellent solution, adapting effortlessly to Tulum’s varied environments.
If you’re staying in a villa in Tulum town or Aldea Zama, you needn’t worry too much about sandy or uneven terrain.
“I always swear by traveling with just a carry-on, especially to warmer climates- it just makes getting places and moving around so much easier and I’d highly recommend it if it’s something you can do.” -says TME editor Esther Reeves.

Extra Things to Pack for Tulum Activities
While the above essentials will get you through your Tulum vacation comfortably, tailoring your packing list to the activities you plan to enjoy can significantly enhance your experience.
If you’re planning on exploring Tulum’s cenotes, renting a bike and exploring the local area, going on a boat trip or doing a yoga retreat here are some extra items you might want to consider bringing.
Water-Based Adventures and Cenotes: For those looking forward to snorkeling or any water activities, a wet bag for your wet bathing suit will keep the rest of your belongings dry. An underwater camera, such as a GoPro, captures stunning aquatic moments. A dry bag is also useful for activities like kayaking.
Bringing your snorkel gear (useful but not essential as it can be rented) and a quick-dry towel can also make these experiences more enjoyable and personalized. Waterproof flip flops are also a good idea and so is a small, packable day backpack.
Note that wearing sunscreen is forbidden in cenotes so you won’t need sunscreen there. You will need it for the beach however.
Exploring Mayan Ruins: Packing sneakers and socks or comfortable walking shoes to navigate the ancient terrain safely, avoiding any injuries or discomfort can be useful.
Yoga Retreats: If yoga classes are on your agenda, pack yoga pants or yoga shorts and workout tops. While mats are often provided, bringing your own can offer a sense of comfort and hygiene for frequent practitioners.
Biking Around Tulum: A headlamp is a must for safe nighttime biking, especially in areas with limited lighting. You might also want to bring sneakers for biking too.

Tulum Packing Tips and Tricks
When packing for a luxurious escape to Tulum, the key is to blend elegance with practicality. Here are some top packing tips we swear by that will help you pack lighter and better for your trip to Tulum.
- Choose a versatile, high-quality suitcase that’s sturdy and lightweight. We love anything by Away or Rimowa which stands up to the journey.
- Pack lightweight, mix-and-match pieces that can transition from day to night, beach to boutique, with ease. We love incorporating items that serve multiple purposes, such as a stylish sarong that can act as a beach cover-up, or a blanket for chilly evenings.
- Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save space and reduce wrinkles, making your outfits ready to wear upon arrival.
- To keep your belongings organized and easily accessible, utilize packing cubes, especially for separating your beachwear from your evening attire.
- For those precious items, such as jewelry or high value accessories, keep them in your carry-on to avoid loss or damage.
- When flying into Cancun ( you might want to now, fly directly into Tulum), queues at customs can be huge, so you don’t want to deal with the hassle of having to pick up luggage too. If your trip is short, consider packing light and traveling with a carry-on only. You don’t need space for layers.
